how to install garden edge steel edging
Garden Edge flexible steel edging is easy to install and offers an affordable, long-lasting solution. For keen do-it-yourselfers, follow our simple instructions below for how to install.
01. Design and prepare the bed.
Lay out the line where your edging is to be installed. A garden hose works well for contours and boards or string lines can be used for straight line plans. 02. Cut a thin trench
With a sharp spade, cut a thin trench about 100 to 150mm deep along your guides. Be sure not to leave any parts of the trench uncut. Soft soil? See our tip on the right. 03. Position Garden Edge
Starting at one end, position the Garden Edge steel edging upright along the trench line with the stake pockets facing towards the lawn edge. Do this by slipping the stakes through the stake pockets just far enough to hold the edging pieces upright and in place. Make the overlap connections with stakes as you go then this should result in a flat, smooth edge to the inside of the garden. Hand form the edging to match the curved portions of the trench line. 04. Tap into place
With the edging and all the stakes in place on top of the trench, you are ready to complete the installation. With a small sledge or heavy hammer and wooden block, tap all the stakes part way down then continue to tap all stakes and edging to desired finished height, i.e. level with lawn or raised for retaining purposes. Your Garden Edge edging will now stay neatly and firmly in place for years to come. |
TIPS & TRICKS To make a right angle: To cut off edging: Soft soil? No trenching needed. |
Always make sure that after your job is complete the stakes are seated fully in the pockets so the top of the stakes are flush with the top of the edging.
You never want the top of the stake higher than the edging.

Accessories
End Pieces
When the edging border starts at a drive or walkway, the end piece is the perfect accessory to use. It caps off the beginning overlap connector for a nice appearance, and provides a canted top corner. To install, snap off the two attached stakes to connect it to the beginning end of the first piece of edging. Ensure all stakes are driven down flush with the top of the edging. |
Splicing Stakes
These are used to join two cut ends when making circles or when lengths need to be cut to go over a rise or on hill sides. Can also be used to for protection over a cut end near a high foot traffic area. |
