Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cut the edging?
In most applications a hacksaw or angle grinder may be used to cut the edging. Edging may be cut all the way through or can be scored along the line and bent back and forth until edging breaks. Always be sure to wear proper safety gear.
How do I determine how much steel edging my project will require?
For straight lines use a tape measure to obtain metres needed. For curves use a water hose to lay out your project. Once you have determined desired shape straighten hose and measure. Remember each length covers 2.1 metres.
NOTE: When calculating needed quantity, please note each length gives approximately 2.1m of finished edging it is best to calculate one length per 2.0m as a little left over is better than having to reorder.
Is steel edging flexible enough for curves?
Yes, the edging is made from mild carbon steel that easily forms by hand for contoured shapes or 90 degree corners with a slight radius.
How do I bend the edging on right angle corners?
Edging can be placed on the ground then a short length of 100mm x 50mm timber placed across edging where bend is needed, then standing on timber edging can easily be bent by hand.
What is the purpose of steel landscape edging?
Steel landscape edging is not meant to be the focal point of any landscape yet a practical solution to create a clean separation between turf and planting area to retain soil, mulch or stone and to keep unwanted grass from entering planting bed. Steel edging can also be used to form paths, drives and as a paver restraint. The black edging can be used as a feature when retaining white stones.
What tools are required for installation?
String line, sharp spade, wooden mallet or 1kg sledge hammer, hack saw or angle grinder, leather gloves, 100mm x50mm wood block, and safety glasses
A sharp spade is useful in hard soils to dig a slight trench for edging to be buried. In softer soils a wood block can be used on top of edging to pound the edging to required depth to prevent damage to the powder coating. In both cases a 1Kg sledge hammer works best to install edging and stakes.
What is the recommended depth when installing steel landscape edging?
It is can be install at least 60-80mm below ground to keep creeping grasses out of planting area or installed to the same level as lawn so lawnmower blade can cut over the top of edging. To retain mulch or rock it can be installed with up to 90mm above ground as the 300mm stakes will hold the edging secure.
Why steel over other materials offered?
Value – When comparing price per metre, steel offers consumers an economical solution that lasts for years…steel edging will not rot, split, chip or crack.
How much is the edging?
2.1 metre length plus three stakes retail cost is $30 + gst.
